1856 - Mr. Tynan was "Master" (operator) of a "barq" (sic barque or bark, by definition a 3 to 5 mast sailing ship). Said ship was registered at Kingston, but docked in New Brunswick (undoubtedly on the Raritan at the terminus of the D & R Canal). This ship seemed to have a name with a very "Irish" spelling (perhaps the word for The Bark (my guess)). Mr. Tynan was contracted to transport the coal (113 tons -- not so large amount for a ship of that size) to Green Island near the city of Troy (Green Island is on the Hudson River in Albany County, NY) a trip that can be made complete by river and bay. Stout, Van Wickle & Co. of New Brunswick brokered the deal. Newberry, Tilly & Co. were the receiving brokers of the coal in Troy. The coal probably came from Pennsylvania to the Delaware River and then up the canal to New Brunswick the out the Raritan to the bay and then to New York and up the Hudson River. It is most certainly 113 tons he was moving. [courtesy of Kathy Tynan via 13 Apr 07 email]
